~ Dancing to Ground ~

Sarah has been dancing since childhood and after many years of performing, teaching and studying internationally, she truly believes in dance as medicine that is meant to be kind to both body and soul.  A blend of her experiences with flamenco, modern dance, improvisation and ballet, her moving medicine embraces the self with kindness and creates a space for authentic self expression. Her Dancing to Ground workshops welcome individuals to approach dance from a wholistic viewpoint that nourishes respectful consideration of their moving body. Participants are encouraged to gradually and gently integrate movement sequences into their own bodies in a way that feels organic and safe.

After decades away from dance, photography began to guide her back in 2020. Since then she has learned to dance again in the capacity that is accessible to her at this point in her life. She finds that her unique, fulfilling and challenging life experiences enrich her ability to comprehend movement as a tool for expression. In response to years of working towards technical proficiency within her artistry, she now seeks to find the ease that will allow her to keep dancing. She loves teaching dance and movement to humans of all ages. Her youngest student is three years old and her oldest is ninety.

She studied at Cornish College of the Arts in Seattle, WA, and Amor de Dios Escuela de Danza Española in Madrid. After moving to New York City in 2000, she performed at multiple flamenco venues and toured with Atrevete Flamenco Dance Theater. In 2007 she co-produced From Persia to Andalucia with Nat Hulskamp and in collaboration with Tariq Banzi of Al-Andaluz and Bobak Salehi of Shabava. She taught flamenco and Spanish language through movement both independently and through the New York City public schools. She eventually gained a B.A. in Hispanic Studies from Columbia University in 2010.

She is currently on the faculty of Bainbridge Dance Center where she teaches flamenco, modern dance and creative movement. She also works with the senior community teaching mobility and stretch at the Bainbridge Island Senior Community Center. She lives, dances, and makes art on Bainbridge Island, the ancestral home of the Suquamish.
